About the Society

The Hobart Wine & Food Society is one of two Wine & Food Societies in Tasmania that are affiliated with the Federation of Wine & Food Societies of Australia. The Federation was formed in the late 1960's to promote an appreciation of wine, food and culinary art by the late Victor Gibson AO. There are now 38 Societies across Australia and New Zealand.
History
WINE & FOOD SOCIETY OF HOBART
The Society was established in the early 1990's under the guidance of the provisional president Tony McDermott. He was subsequently elected President and the Wine & Food Society of Hobart formally began. The first dinner was held at the Royal Tennis Club in Davey St and the chef was well known Hobart artist Tom Samek. It was a formal black tie dinner. For several years the Society was an all male club with a strict black tie dress code. By the mid to latter 1990's the club changed from the black tie men only scenario to a slightly more relaxed dress code allowing lounge suits and accepting women as members.
In early March 1998, the Hobart Society successfully hosted and organised the National Convention for the Federation of Wine and Food Societies of Australia. The convention attracted 100 delegates with functions held at the Royal Tennis Court, Revolving Restaurant at Wrest Point and the Royal Hobart Yacht Club.
Membership has been consistently held at between 30 and 40 members over that period of time and the relaxed dress codes have continued for most dinner meetings with a couple of more formal black tie dinners each year. Five dinner functions are held annually as well as wine tastings, an informal BBQ and a fabulous weekend away which has taken us to the Tamar Valley, the East Coast and to to the Tasman Peninsula.
For 2012 we had a weekend away at Corinna on the Pieman River, right in the Tarkine and in 2014 we hosted once again another National Convention.
